Never forget 3 types of people in your life:
1. Who helped you in difficult times.
2. Who left you in difficult times.
3. Who put you in difficult times.
Having good friends are known to have positive effects in one’s life. One of it is longevity, according to a study by the Centre of Ageing Study at Flinders University in Australia. The respondents who had large group of friends lived 22% longer that those who didn’t. The researchers attributed their longevity to having good influence and the emotional benefits of companionship such as optimism and healthy self-esteem.
However, loyalty is not everyone’s strong suit. Some people leave when the relationship is no longer convenient for them, or if they think that misfortunes are contagious. Dr. Jackson Rainer, professor of psychology at Georgia Southern University, coined the term “stiff arming” to describe the behaviour of friends who distance themselves to avoid catching your troubles. Relationship experts advice that being with friends who “pseudo-care” can cause stress instead of relief.
But a much bigger problem happens when you’re dealing with a toxic people. The emotional stress they cause affects physically by causing damage to your brain. A longer exposure can lead to cognitive deterioration. Knowing how to handle toxic people is necessary especially in the workplace. A study by TalentSmart shows 90% top performers are in control of their emotions, allowing them to block out the negativity that toxic people consciously or unconsciously exude.
Unpleasant people make us realize the value of real friends. As Marcel Proust put it, “Let us be grateful to people who make us happy, they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.”
